Review of Watcher in the Woods by Kelley Armstrong

4 out of 5 stars

Thank you so much to St. Martins Press and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first book to read from the series (wasn’t even aware there was other books before this one) and I plan on going back and reading the the first three since I enjoyed this one so much. I have loved her writing since her YA novels back in the late 2000s so I was very excited for this new series. Well, new to me at least.

This book is about Casey who is the only detective in the small town of Rockton in the Yukon. The town of Rockton is far off the grid and a town of secrets, where people pay to hide out from their old life for a few years before beginning a brand new one. Murderers that have been released, criminals on the run, and people fleeing from their abusers come here to hide out where the contact with the outside world is regulated. When a U.S. Marshall comes to arrest a fugitive and is shot and killed, Casey’s list of suspects keeps getting bigger and bigger. Casey must figure out which criminal killed the Marshall and how he even found out about the remote town.

Going into this having not read the first three books in the series I would get a little confused when things that happened previously were mentioned. One thing I would love to know is more details about how Casey came to be in this small town and I do plan on reading the other books in the series. I loved the characters and mystery in this book also, I loved the small remote town that no one really knows about. This is an edgy and dark story and I think the author has more books planned for this series and I’m very excited to read them!
