Review of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

4 out of 5 stars

I finally had to see what all the talk is about. I won’t lie, this was my first true “fairytale” book I’ve ever read and honestly I didn’t hate it. This was also my first book by Holly Black that I’ve read (I’ll probably be shunned for admitting that) and I’m very excited to read more by her now. I love her style of writing and how she portrays her characters.

Jude and her twin sister Taryn are human but their older sister Vivienne belonged to an entirely different world that they were not aware of. When their mother was pregnant with Vivienne she fled from this world and went on to have twin daughters with her husband. When Madoc, her ex-husband and Vivienne’s father murders the girls’ mom and dad they are taken to a world they never imagined could exist. At first Jude and Taryn adapt well to the fairyland but as they get older they realize that they will never fit in as humans.

The beginning of this book dragged on a little for me but I’m glad I kept with it because it did pick up after awhile. I loved Jude’s character and how independent and kick ass she was.

As I said, this was my first true fantasy novel and my first book I’ve read by Holly Black and I really enjoyed it. I’m not saying this is my new favorite genre of novels but I do plan on reading more of her work and hopefully it’s as good as this!
